A binding treaty would have required India to automatically enter any US-China confrontation, including over Taiwan — a conflict India has no strategic interest in. What emerged instead is a flexible platform for cooperation on maritime security, technology, critical minerals, supply chain resilience, and public health — without collective defence obligations.
